Major sewer upgrade for Harare

HARARE City Council is undertaking a sewer pipeline replacement project in Kuwadzana 7 to reduce blockages in the area.

The work also includes upgrading the major sewer line serving a number of neighbouring areas like Marlborough, Mabelreign, Westgate, Bluff Hill, Ashdown Park, Dzivaresekwa and Tynwald, among others.

Pipe bursts and sewer blockages have been a major issue in the area and engineers are working to rectify the problem.

Harare Town Clerk, Hosiah Chisango, said the need to replace old pipes was an ongoing project and must be expedited to keep up with President Mnangagwa’s call for improved service delivery.

The plan is to replace close to 3 000-4 000km of wastewater pipes per year.

“We want to increase the pace with which we replace those pipes. Every year, we should replace those pipes,” said Chisango.

“We have a network of close to 5 000km of water pipes and between 3 000km to 4 000km for wastewater pipes.

“We are looking at the call to action that has been made by His Excellency on local authorities and we are keeping an eye on it to say by 2030 we should be providing good services. We need properly sized and new pipes to be able to do that.

“For wastewater, it is similar to a project that we are carrying out where we want to address blockages being reported in high-density areas,” he said.

Chisango said they were upgrading the sewer network in cholera-prone places like Glen View, Kuwadzana and Mbare.

They are also attending to bigger pipes that cross streams because they are discharging sewer into the streams.

“The idea is to collect all the wastewater from the city for treatment works.

“There is also work being done at the waterworks.”
