gig that will feature some of the country’s top musicians among them Suluman Chimbetu, Jah Prayzah, Peter Moyo and the Dembo Brothers, Morgan and Tendai.
Organised by Barbara Chikosi of Red Rose Promotions, the gig promises to be a thrilling encounter, where Extra Kwazvose would have to be prove to all dry and sundry that they are capable of holding their own and can outperform their former bosses, Alick Macheso and Suluman.
But probably the biggest debate on the group’s capability is on the social media, where fans have taken strong positions, with some saying the debut show would be a thriller, while others have since dismissed it before it has taken place.
Other fans said the formation of the group was a welcome move since it promotes growth in the music industry.
“Sungura is the most popular and best selling type of music in Zimbabwe therefore, just like reggae, jazz and other music genres, it has produced experts and there is no compelling reason why these guys should play anything other than sungura. That’s their area and they are good at it. I don’t think they have time to start experimenting.
“The most important things are meaningful lyrics, good music and good showmanship. They aren’t stupid, I’m sure they have been working on that the last 10 months. Let’s not speculate and let’s not be negative, give them a chance,” said another music fan, Gabriel Mundoti.
“In Zimbabwe brands sale more than the sound does. Are the new guys going to offer competition to the Cheso brand? What is it that they have that will make them special?” asked one music fan identified as Tinashe Gunya.
“Overzealous”
However, Charity Gumoyo had no kind words for the group rubbishing it as ambitious and overzealous.
“Very true, this folks are too ambitious and overzealous . . . there is nothing worthy listening to except trash and ear pollution. They formed the band with the intention of making money, nothing else.
“What they did not realise is that they were born to work not to be masters. Franco was born to dance to music, Obert was born to play drums nothing more, Kasamba to make chants and noise just like a supporter and Noel just to play lead guitar no more to add.
“But if we combine all their talents plus playing bass guitar and vocals we get half of Macheso.”
However, whatever sentiments, comments and reservations that music fans have will be put to test when the “rebels” go on stage on Friday for the first time, since they announced the formation of the group.
Knowing the kind of pressure that they are likely to face come Friday night, the group is not leaving anything to chance, but have actually been working hard to perfect their art.
In an interview recently the group confirmed that they were working hard on rehearsals, adding that they have since finished recording their 10-track
album.
The songs on Extra Kwazvose’s album were written by both Slomo and Kasamba over the past 10 months.
Kasamba wrote “Africa”, “A’Jurias” and “Amen” while Slomo penned “Gurajena”, “Ishewangu Ndinotenda”, “Mai vaBonnie” and “Mudiwa Wangu”.
