Make your food your medicine

Hello friends and welcome again to my herbal corner. Today we will share more tips on eating well. 

You might have heard this rom somewhere before. I have taken the liberty to simplify the information for you. Many  have been told to reduce intake of starch so that you can control blood pressure, diabetes, arthritis, reduce cancers and so on. 

They have come to me asking how they are meant to do that effectively. Given that background, I decided to come up with some detail on what to eat and how to go about it. I am hoping you will find this interesting and most importantly, helpful.

1. You need to reduce your intake of refined starch. Key word — Reduce. Do not punish yourself. You still need to enjoy living…

How then do we handle starch in-take?

a) For rice, white or brown, soak overnight in cold water and then cook it normally

b) Potatoes — soak overnight

c) Sweet potatoes — soak overnight

d) Cassava — soak overnight

e) Yams — soak overnight

f) Eat more brown maize meal for sadza and porridge

2.  The following can be cooked playfully and in a healthy delicious way. Check for mouth-watering recipes.

a) Quinoea b) Butter-nut c) All pumpkins (the gourd family) d) Cassava  e) Round nuts f) Bulgar g) Buckwheat h) Lentils i) Beans j) Oats k) Bran-flakes with loads of dried fruit l) Buckwheat m) Eggs- mostly boiled n) Witabix o) Seeds-pumpkin, sesame, flax, chia, : used in cereal or other meals p) Amaranth flour or flax/ lin seed flour, for baking bread and muffins and healthy scones q) Olive oil, sesame oil, flax seed oil, coconut oil for cooking

r) Coconut milk or almond milk or soya milk or coconut cream for tea

s) Peanut butter or cashew-nut butter or almond nut butter for bread  t) Desiccated coconut flakes for cereal and cakes u) Loads of carrot and home- made carrot juice, even on daily basis as many times as you can v) Loads of veggies, green, red and yellow: three quarters of a healthy meal is made up of these and there is no compromise w) Loads of mushrooms., chicken is acceptable, and fish is commendable. For me, no beef especially for cancer patients

x) You can make delicious meals using the commercially produced white soups such as the Knorr mushroom soup, the minestrone soup, the vegetable soup and the chicken soups. Choose you favourite varieties.  y) Butternut can also be used to make a very filling soup as a meal especially when a person is very sick and cannot eat much or cannot keep anything down.  z) Sweet potatoes make beautiful fresh chips and soups as well as a perfect addition to savoury meat dishes. 

3. Fruits   

Mixed fruit salad is to be eaten before the breakfast meal in the morning. It can be combined with yoghurt or blended to be a smoothie. If not, one can add the fresh fruit to some cereal the add milk or yoghurt. One got to have fresh fruit first thing in the morning every God-given day. 

Notably for those looking to slim down, one can go on a fruit and juice diet for 7 days or go on a fruit, juice and water therapy for 7 days for amazing results in weight loss. Besides the same methods work well if one is looking to detoxify and tone the body. The answer is in fruit and water and or juice. The dieticians call it the water fruit juice fasting. It works wonders for cancer patients too.

4. Water should always be taken at room temperature during the day even when temperatures are burning hot. You will find that it is still able to quench your thirst for water effectively. It is advisable to have 2 to 3 glasses of warm water first thing in the morning on waking up before anything else is eaten. This will help in cleansing the tummy and allowing one to go to the bathroom for evacuation. Flashing out the system every day is essential.

5. Lemon is the best alkaline source food. It can be used in herbal teas, drinks and in water. It can be used in food as much as possible. However, I still recommend fresh plain and warm water for the morning and some lemon water any other time of the day if one wants that. 

Some people fear use of lemon because they have an ulcer. But truth be told, lemon calms a cramping tummy for an ulcerated person. All they need is some light food along some lemon flavoured tea and in no time the cramping disappears.

6. Alkaline juice: a necessary trick to remove acidity in the whole system. I recommend having the juice freshly squeezed once a fortnight or once a month. But if one can afford it, why not, even everyday as part of breakfast.

7. When you cannot poo properly use plums as food or corn silk as tea. Cew on the silk and swallow. Yes, rurebvu rwechibage, and from Samanyika, ndebvu dzemagwere. You heard me right… They are amazing for fixing that problem. Adding cornsilk to the mix will help one urinate and cleanse the urinary tract. Flax seed is a recommended addition. Cornsilk is a natural laxative. Add your plums and cornsilk and flaxseed for a healthy gut and happy kidneys.

8. Remember your first FIRST  AID  KIT in the home is your spice rack. Use your spices for teas to ensure that you assimilate the good nutrients into your blood stream, even on daily basis. A pinch is your God given measurement for your cup of tea.

9. Turmeric, rosemary, cayenne and oregano  for all stroke patients, all migraine headaches, all heart issues. A pinch of each plus lemon will make an amazing cuppa first thing in the morning

10. Cayenne plus turmeric and oregano — for heart related issues

11. Mint plus grape leaf plus eucalyptus — for all chest infections and flue

Onion and honey and mint for baby coughs and flu

12. Just a few tips to live a happy and healthy life. Make your food your daily medicine. Remember to sip on Graviola daily. Look after yourself and each other.
