China withdraw from Davis Cup tie against Zim

THE Davis Cup World Group II tie between Zimbabwe and China will no longer take place following the withdrawal of the Asian giants because of travel restrictions.  The tie was due to take place on September 17 and 18 in Harare.

However, travel restrictions, as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, have thwarted Zimbabwe’s hopes of hosting China, in what was expected to be an interesting tie. The World Group II ties were among the tennis events rescheduled from 2020, to this year, due to the pandemic.

According to the updates on the Davis Cup website yesterday, Zimbabwe will advance to either the World Group I Knock-out ties in November, or World Group I Play-offs, in March next year.

“China has withdrawn from their Davis Cup by Rakuten World Group II tie against Zimbabwe on 17 – 18 September due to travel restrictions.

“Zimbabwe will advance to play in either the World Group I knock-out ties in November or to the World Group I Play-offs in March 2022,” read the statement.

Preparations to host the tie were at an advanced stage but, it appears, Tennis Zimbabwe will have to wait a little bit longer for another tie.

It is not just the tie between Zimbabwe and China, which has been affected by the pandemic.

The tie between Morocco and Chinese Taipei was also affected. Morocco advance to the next stage, after Chinese Taipei withdrew as well.

“The Davis Cup Committee has accepted the withdrawal of Chinese Taipei from their Davis Cup by Rakuten World Group II tie against Morocco on 16 – 17 September.

“The committee considered the Covid-19 restrictions and protocols proposed for the tie by the Chinese Taipei Tennis Association and determined it unfeasible for the ties to be held at home.

“Morocco will advance to play in either the World Group I Knock-out ties in November or to the World Group I Play-offs in March 2022.”
