Mthabisi Tshuma in Gwanda
RENOWNED South African songstress Makhadzi made an unforgettable debut in Gwanda on Saturday, delivering a spirited performance that firmly cemented her status as one of Africa’s most electrifying entertainers.
Held at Phoenix Shisanyama, the much-anticipated concert drew a massive crowd, with fans travelling from across Matabeleland South and beyond — including Beitbridge, Bulawayo, Filabusi, and Zvishavane — to witness the Queen of Limpopo in action.
The night was charged with anticipation as revellers braved the chilly weather, waiting patiently into the early hours. It wasn’t until 2am that Makhadzi finally graced the stage — but when she did, the atmosphere erupted.
Opening the evening was emerging Bulawayo group Asante Mo, who impressed with their debut Gwanda performance, delivering smooth, soulful vibes that set the tone for the night. They were followed by the ever-energetic Jah Signal, who ignited the crowd with his signature Stonyeni flair, ensuring the stage was ablaze with excitement ahead of the headline act.

Jah Signal then seized the moment to introduce the South African superstar, joining her on stage to perform his hit Stonyeni — a track Makhadzi appeared to know word for word, much to the crowd’s delight.
When Makhadzi emerged, clad in a vibrant costume and radiating energy, the audience erupted. She launched into a string of hits including fan favourites Ghanama, MaGear, and Jealous Down, transforming the venue into a pulsating dance floor. Her powerful vocals, dynamic choreography, and magnetic stage presence kept fans on their feet, singing and dancing throughout her set.
Despite the dropping temperatures, the energy remained electric. Makhadzi’s ability to connect with the crowd through her music, storytelling, and humble persona was a standout feature. She paused between songs to engage with fans, thank them for their unwavering support, and even cracked jokes — creating an intimate atmosphere despite the large turnout.
Her set lasted over 90 minutes, and as her time on stage drew to a close, the crowd pleaded for more. For nearly 20 minutes, fans begged her not to leave — and in true Makhadzi fashion, she obliged, delivering an extended encore that left revellers thoroughly satisfied.
The success of the show not only reinforced Makhadzi’s cross-border appeal but also positioned Gwanda as a potential hotspot for major entertainment events in Zimbabwe. The combination of strong local support, a warm reception, and top-tier performances made it a night to remember. As the final song faded and Makhadzi took her bow under a blanket of cheers and applause, one thing was certain: the Queen of Limpopo had conquered Gwanda. — @mthabisi_mthire
