JOHANNESBURG. – Award-winning musician and performer Makhadzi, real name Ndivhudzannyi Ralivhona, has pledged her support for fellow musician and her partner Master KG amid his legal woes about alleged copyright infringement.
“Besides zwinzhizwinzi (a lot [of things]), I am a big fan of @MasterKGsa. Like truth must be told, he is multi-talented [and] everything touch[es] turned into gold,” she wrote on social media. “Look at his first piano song – 13 million in 4 months[s] without any dance challenges. God, please protect Master KG. We still want more hit[s]. Amen.”
Her post came just hours after musicians Charmza the DJ and Biblos, through a press statement, said they instituted legal proceedings against Master KG, record label Open Mic Productions, and music distributor Africori for alleged copyright infringement in respect of the commercialisation and master recording of Jerusalema.
According to the statement, Master KG and Open Mic released the recording of the song without obtaining any rights clearances from the artists who originated the song and produced the recording. The statement adds that the two parties allegedly did not secure a license or clearance from Biblos, who owns the sound recording that was sampled in the track.
Meanwhile, court papers obtained by Channel24, in part, allege that Master KG and Open Mic Productions “exploited” the copyright works of Charmza the DJ and Biblos for commercial gain since 2019 and reproduced the sound recording without paying Charmza the DJ and royalties.
Open Mic Productions MD Nkateko Maluleke says they are aware of the matter and that it is before the court.
