Mokima Music & Publishing has responded to Makhadzi’s claims that they are taking her royalties.
On Monday, Makhadzi alleged that her old management (Open Mic) opened a new company in partnership with Mokima (Virgin Music) and they have been collecting her publishing royalties on her behalf from Samro without her knowledge.
“At this point, I don’t know what to do with myself,” she wrote on a blog.
Mokima issued a statement responding to the allegations, saying they are resolving the matter through appropriate legal channels including the courts because they have a signed agreement to lawfully collect the royalties.
“Mokima Music & Publishing entered into a valid administration and publishing agreement with Nazwo Digital, the original publisher for Makhadzi. We are in possession of a signed publishing agreement between Nazwo Digital and the composer, Makhadzi. In accordance with this agreement, Mokima Music & Publishing has lawfully collected publishing royalties on behalf of Nazo Digital for their catalogue.
“All royalties due have been distributed to Nazwo Digital as per our agreement. Mokima Music & Publishing conducts all its operations with integrity and within the ambit of our agreements and the law. We remain fully committed to addressing and resolving this matter through appropriate legal channels, including the courts. We encourage the affected parties to follow the necessary channels available to resolve this amicably and transparently.”
In May 2023 Makhadzi, real name Ndivhudzannyi Ralivhona, announced her departure from Open Mic Productions to focus on her company and other business ventures after deciding not to renew her contract with them.
Her new management company previously told TshisaLIVE it saw a great future for Makhadzi through her company as she was set to own her music, host events and sign other talent to the business.
“We found the deal that was in place before we could on-board and because it’s a lawsuit, we cannot ignore it. What we are going to do is engage with the Kicks company so we can find a solution, and if that does not work and they want to continue with the lawsuit, it will be a different matter, but for now, our approach is sit down with them and see how we can resolve it before we can go anywhere,” Makhadzi Entertainment’s Lucky Tshilimandila told Tshisa LIVE − Times.
