Makhadzi’s story of survival, faith, rebirth

South African hitmaker Makhadzi is set to release her highly anticipated EP, BIG 30, today, a personal project that marks a defining chapter in her life and career. More than just a musical release, the EP captures her journey through resilience, self-discovery and renewed purpose.

Turning 30 this year represents more than a milestone birthday for the Limpopo-born star; it is a moment of reflection, gratitude and rebirth. From performing on dusty village streets and community gatherings to commanding major stages across Africa, Makhadzi’s rise has been driven by relentless perseverance and an unshakable belief in her dreams.

BIG 30 stands as a heartfelt body of work shaped by hardship, faith and an enduring spirit. With limited resources and no clear roadmap at the start of her journey, she built her career from the ground up, guided by passion and a deep connection to her roots.

Each track carries emotional weight, weaving together stories of struggle, triumph and survival. The lead single, Cancela Lenyalo, already available on streaming platforms, has been warmly received by fans and offers a glimpse into the EP’s reflective tone.

The project comes in the wake of a traumatic car accident she survived on December 21, 2025. The incident, which occurred while she was travelling from Limpopo to Johannesburg for a New Year’s Eve performance, forced her into a 10-week break from live shows. During her recovery, Makhadzi turned to music as a form of healing, recording songs that mirror her lived experience.

“This album is my heart. Turning 30 made me realise how far I’ve come — from nothing to something. I’ve faced pain, challenges, and moments where I almost lost my life. But I’m still here. And that means God is not done with me yet,” she shared.

She added: “BIG 30 is not just about celebrating my birthday. It’s about celebrating survival. It’s about thanking everyone who believed in me when I had nothing. It’s about showing young girls from the villages that their dreams are valid.”

One of the standout tracks from the album, Operations featuring Mr Brown and TS Man, offers raw insight into her recovery, with lyrics that echo her vulnerability and strength. —Online
