Makokoba’s legacy as the powerhouse of Zimbabwean arts continues to grow, with the emergence of a dynamic rap duo set to redefine the local hip-hop scene.
Tee x Tekie, the Sibanda brothers, Talent and Talkmore, are creating waves with their unique blend of languages and culture-infused rap, leaving many talking about their fresh sound.
The brothers recently caused a stir after a powerful performance of their upcoming track, Anthem of Hope, at the National Excellence Hall of Fame Awards in Harare. The song, blending Ndebele, Shona, and English, showcases their creativity and drive to make an impact in the rap industry.
Having started making music in 2012 while attending Milton High, Tee x Tekie began to take their craft seriously in 2017, culminating in the release of their EP, “Siyabonga”, an album, “Spotlight”, and a string of singles.
Speaking to Zimpapers Arts and Entertainment Hub, the duo shared their journey and the challenges they have faced while chasing their musical dreams.
“We are a duo of brothers doing trilingual hip-hop. It’s been our dream since childhood, so we’re just chasing what we love. Financial challenges have been our biggest obstacle. Studio time and creating beats isn’t cheap because most studios prioritise money over talent,” said the brothers.
Tee x Tekie’s style draws inspiration from everyday life, culture, and the diversity of languages that unite Zimbabwean communities.
“Our style is about connecting with what people love, especially through our mix of Ndebele, Shona, and English. The way fans have embraced us on social media is overwhelming. The love and encouragement we’re getting means everything to us, and we deeply appreciate everyone supporting Tee x Tekie,” they said.
As independent artistes, the duo prides itself on controlling its schedule and creative process.
“We create our own recording and marketing timelines and don’t let pressure define our work. Although finances aren’t flooding in yet, we’re putting in the hard work to make sure our music reaches the right ears,” they added.
The brothers have promised more releases this year, starting with a new single set to drop at the end of this month. With the buzz surrounding their latest performances, fans and music lovers alike are urged to keep a close eye on Tee x Tekie as they continue to carve their name in Zimbabwe’s hip-hop scene.
Makokoba has produced legends like the late Beater Mangete, Dorothy Masuka, and Siyaya Arts, and now Tee x Tekie are poised to carry that torch into a new era of music. – Follow on X: @mthabisi_mthire
