A 19-YEAR-OLD Bulawayo teenager has been sentenced to five years in prison after he was caught in possession of stolen copper cables belonging to the Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC).

Zithelo Moyo of Entumbane suburb was convicted by Bulawayo magistrate Mr Taurai Manure for contravening a section of the Electricity Act, which prohibits the unlawful possession of copper cables.

In passing sentencing, the magistrate said copper cable theft remains a serious offence that hampers service delivery and must be met with stiff penalties to deter would-be offenders

The court heard that on 24 June, police received a tip-off that Moyo was in possession of stolen copper.
Acting on the information, officers raided his home and discovered rolls of copper cable weighing 3,25kg. Moyo failed to provide a satisfactory explanation for the possession, leading to his arrest.
