MAKONI Rural District Council’s chief executive officer, Engineer Edmore Chidembo and two Rusape Town Council officials were involved in separate serious road accidents last week.

Engineer Chidembo was rushed to Harare for specialist treatment after the accident on Thursday night and was discharged over the weekend.

Engineer Chidembo’s Toyota Fortuner collided with a Mazda B1800, which had encroached into his lane after being struck by a haulage truck.

Manicaland police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka, confirmed Engineer Chidembo’s accident, which occurred near Rukweza Business Centre in Nyazura.

Sadly, one passenger in the Mazda B1800 succumbed to their injuries upon admission at hospital in Rusape.

“On July 3, 2025, around 10pm, Lloyd Piwai was driving a Mazda B1800 towards Chivhu with one passenger on board. Engineer Chidembo was driving towards Nyazura with no passengers. A haulage truck, travelling behind Piwai’s vehicle, struck it from behind, causing Piwai’s vehicle to swerve into the opposite lane, blocking Engineer Chidembo’s path. Engineer Chidembo’s vehicle then collided with the Mazda B1800.

“The truck driver failed to stop at the scene. Both Piwai and Engineer Chidembo sustained injuries and were rushed to a private hospital in Rusape by well-wishers. The passenger in Piwai’s vehicle, unfortunately, died upon admission. The vehicles suffered extensive damage and were towed to VID Rusape for inspection. Investigations are ongoing,” said Assistant Inspector Chinyoka.

In a separate incident, two RTC officials were involved in a serious road traffic accident in Chivhu.

Town planner, Mr Blessing Kwambana, and water technician, Mr Brian Gwamura suffered serious injuries when the Toyota Surf they were travelling in was involved in the accident.

Mr Gwamura, who is also the Acting Town Engineer, remains hospitalised in Harare, where his condition is reported to be serious.

Mr Kwambana has since been discharged.
