HAVING missed the last two editions of the ICC T20 Cricket World Cup, Zimbabwe Cricket have challenged the Chevrons to take advantage of the home conditions and seal place at the 2026 T20 World Cup.
Zimbabwe will battle it out with seven other countries -Namibia, Uganda, Kenya, Nigeria, Tanzania, Botswana and Malawi—for two spots at the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup to be hosted by India and Sri Lanka.
ZC want the Chevrons to be at their best and seal a place among the top cricket playing nations at the next World Cup.ZC Managing Director, Givemore Makoni, told Zimpapers Sports Hub that the ball was now in the national team’s court to play their part after the mother body did its part in terms of preparations for the qualifiers.
“We have been preparing for these qualifiers over the past six months or so and If you look at our itinerary, in terms of cricket played, apart from the Test matches that we play, we have also been playing a lot of white ball cricket, but mainly T20 biased.
“We played South Africa and New Zealand and then we came out of that and we played Sri Lanka and we just finished of playing Namibia, which is on the eve of the qualifiers themselves.
“We have put in everything to ensure that we qualify and I like what I am seeing in terms of the team.
“So, I can say we are ready and I expect nothing but qualification for the T20 World Cup,” said Makoni.
With Zimbabwe Cricket still on cloud nine following the ladies triumph at the Africa T20 World Cup global qualifiers, in which they were dominant en-route to sealing a place at the global qualifiers, Makoni has challenged the men’s team to be as ruthless as their female counterparts.
“So, in terms of our expectations, we expect the team to, just like what our women’s team did in Namibia, be able to dominate and win and qualify.”
The top two teams will earn their place at next year’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka.
The teams have been grouped into two groups.
Group A has Namibia, Kenya, Malawi and Nigeria while group B has hosts Zimbabwe, Uganda, Botswana and Tanzania.
