Chimurenga musician Kurai Makore is set to embark on a tour of the United Kingdom in August, a well-deserved recognition of his talent and dedication.
The 37-year-old has overcome numerous challenges, transitioning from a bus conductor and vendor to a celebrated musician living his dream.
Known for his high-energy performances and meticulously choreographed acts, Makore has captured the attention of many promoters since being introduced to the music scene by his uncle, Thomas “Mukanya” Mapfumo.
Not only has he received the green light to pursue Chimurenga music and perform Mukanya’s songs, but he will also share the stage with his idol in Birmingham on August 23.
Touted as Mukanya’s farewell show before he retires, this event will mark a significant moment as the iconic US-based musician passes the baton to Makore during his last UK tour.
In an interview with Zimpapers Arts and Entertainment Hub, Makore expressed his excitement about the invitation.
“I couldn’t resist the offer to perform in the UK alongside my uncle and father figure, Thomas Mapfumo,” he said. “I understand this is meant to be a farewell bash, and the stakes are high considering his profile and the path he has paved in music.”
He continued: “His shoes are enormous, and no one can truly fill them given his achievements over the years. While it will be a grand celebration, being part of this line-up is a privilege I will cherish for years to come.”
Reflecting on his first trip to the UK, Makore shared his anticipation and anxiety but remains focused on his goals.
“I’m determined to rewrite my story,” he stated.
Having received Mukanya’s blessings to pursue Chimurenga music, Makore added: “I can’t imagine him wanting to retire now. It’s hard to step away from what you love. I plan to learn directly from him as we celebrate someone who is 80 years old. He still has so much to offer, and as a family, we are proud to have him.”
Makore made his mark in the music industry in 2020 with his debut album, “Gara Unzwe”, but it was his second album, “Ngoma Kurira”, released in 2022, that heralded a new era for him, leading to performances at major local festivals.
He has been excelling in live shows ever since.
“I always take each performance seriously, and this could be the reason why fans are now flocking to my shows in large numbers. Sometimes I am surprised to note that I have such a big following attending my shows, and most of these fans have been loyal to us.
“It’s like a miracle to realise that each and every show has left me with valuable experiences as an artiste. I feel honoured and motivated to continue working hard as an artiste,” conceded Makore.
“I don’t take the fans’ loyalty for granted, and I wish to carry the same spirit to the UK in August because I will also be celebrating my third album, my first tour of the UK, and being reunited with my loved ones.
“There is more to this tour on the horizon because it means a lot to me and my fans.”
In another interview with the UK show promoter, Joab Mugugu of Phab Entertainment Promotions, the excitement surrounding Mukanya’s farewell show was palpable.
Mugugu’s renowned stable has been in the industry for over two decades, and hosting such a significant event is a testament to their credibility.
“We are honoured by the trust bestowed upon us by the legendary Mukanya and do not take it for granted. Anyone who knows him understands that he is a perfectionist, particularly regarding sound quality. His rehearsals resemble a real show, so providing him with perfect sound is crucial,” he emphasised.
Mugugu also noted the overwhelming demand for Mukanya’s UK show, with many enquiries from Europe and fans booking hotels and seeking tickets.
He expressed confidence in Makore’s potential to follow in his uncle’s footsteps and encouraged him to leverage the UK platform to showcase his talent.
“Given that he is widely regarded as the heir apparent to the Chimurenga music throne, it was fitting to include Kurai for Mukanya to officially endorse and hand him over to his fans.
“He has a strong stage presence and a polished act, despite the significant shoes he must fill.”
Since announcing Makore as the only supporting act for the show, promoters have been inundated with calls from various artistes eager to participate.
While many are Zimbabweans living in Europe, the event organisers will carefully select additional performers to ensure that the focus remains on Mukanya.
Mukanya is a living legend with over six decades in the music industry.
Such icons often groom their successors, and in this case, Makore is a perfect fit, even if his shoes are large.
Makore is looking forward to learning from Mukanya as he begins his own journey.
