ZIMBABWEAN international chess master, Rodwell Makoto will represent Zimbabwe at this year’s FIDE World Rapid and Blitz Championships 2024.
The event is to be held in New York City from December 26 to 31.
The South Africa-based Makoto will be part of the historic event being held in North America for the first time. Makoto returns from a remarkable performance at the 45th Chess Olympiad, where his contributions were pivotal in securing a silver medal for the Zimbabwean team. Zimbabwe Chess Federation (ZCF) secretary general Blessing Moyo said they are thrilled to have Makoto as the country’s representative.
“As ZCF we are happy to announce that IM Makoto will represent the country at this year’s Rapid and Blitz chess tournament.
“As the world’s top chess players gather for the fast-paced formats of Rapid and Blitz chess which require quick decision-making and exceptional mental endurance, we are hopeful of making Makoto one of the favourites.
“This is not Makoto’s first encounter with elite competitions; and he is no newcomer to facing the world’s best, having previously represented Zimbabwe at two FIDE World Cup tournaments. Makoto was part of the World Cup in Baku, Azerbaijan in 2023 and Sochi, Russia in 2021,” said Moyo. Todd Mapingire the ZCF president said they are happy to announce that Makoto will represent the country at the prestigious tournament. “This is a unique opportunity for chess to shine in such a prestigious setting. “We are proud to support Rodwell as he competes among the best in the world, showcasing the talent and potential of Zimbabwean chess on an international stage.” As a federation we encourage all chess enthusiasts to follow Rodwell’s journey and support his efforts as he competes at this prestigious championship,” said Mapingire. The event will kick off with the Rapid Championship from December 26 to 28, followed by a day off on December 29.
The Blitz Championship will resume on December 30 and 31.
