MAKUMBE Hilltop College in Domboshava says it derives a lot of pride for being the only school in the area which makes it mandatory for its students to learn Ndebele.
The students are also taught Law and Mandarin (Chinese).
“As part of our curriculum, our students also learn Law, Mandarin (Chinese), and we pride ourselves on being the only school in Mashonaland East that teaches Ndebele,” said principal Mark Manyenye.
“We want to produce a complete student that can compete on the international stage.”
The college is setting the bar high for private schools in the area with an enhanced curriculum and state-of-the-art learning facilities.
Built on a mountain top overlooking Makumbe Visitation High School, on one side, and a beautiful view of the countryside on the other, the school opened its doors in January this year.
“We have excellent facilities that cannot be compared with many boarding schools”, said Manyenye.
“Our hostels accommodate six students per room, who share a toilet and bathroom with two showers for the six, all fitted with solar geysers,” said Manyenye.
“Each student has a wardrobe for privacy.
“We have WiFi for students and solar lights in every room in case of power outages.
“We want our students to feel at home hence the intimate set-up as opposed to big hostels that you usually find in other schools.
“Our classrooms have modern facilities, including projectors, to enhance the learning experience.”
The school also has a state-of-the-art kitchen and dining hall, manned by professional staff to make sure students meet dietary requirements.
Makumbe Hilltop College students are getting high quality education that matches international standards.
The school founder and director, Bernard Fungayi Mutizwa, said Makumbe Hilltop College is his way of developing Domboshava.
“I was born here, so taking from the President’s mantra that ‘nyika inovakwa nevene vayo’, we found no excuse other than to follow suit”, said Mutizwa.
“We had been saving some money as a family so we thought of investing in something meaningful that we would leave as a legacy, that’s when we discussed with my wife Eva, on building an institution of such magnificence”.
Mutizwa said the school is not the only way he is giving back to his community.
“We have also sponsored the gravelling of the road which leads to Visitation, and concurrently, to our school.
Eva Mutizwa, a co-director of the school, said it took six years to complete the building of the school.
“We started building the school six years ago, starting with the staff quarters, then moved to the classrooms, then the administration and other facilities,” she said.
