The 19-year-old lanky model has made it through to the top 20 of the Miss Beach Beauty and Miss Top Model, the contests which are held in the run up to the Miss World grand finale.
For a contestant to make it to the Top 50 of the Miss World they have to stand-out in other preliminary rounds such as the Miss Beach Beauty, Miss Top Model and the mother of them all – Beauty with a Purpose.
Indications are that Malaika is already climbing her way up the ladder as she continues to make waves with her height of 82 metres and her natural African beauty.
The Miss World finals are scheduled for this Saturday at Earls Court, London.
One of Malaika’s chaperon, Salome Chari of the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority who are sponsoring the national queen, said she was confident that Malaika would pull through to the last round.
“She has been amazing on the ramp and was one of the few contestants who presented a speech at the University of Cambridge. She’s really been outstanding,” Chari said.
This year, the Miss World celebrates its 60th birthday, exactly six decades after the first contest was held in 1951.
The first Miss World winner, Kiki Hakansson from Sweden, was chosen from 26 contestants and received a cheque for £1 000.
Sixty years on, the star-studded 2011 Miss World finals will bring together representatives from a record 122 countries, celebrity judges, former winners and top entertainers and the event will be broadcast live to over 150 countries with a global audience of over one billion.
The Miss World pageant is now one of the most watched annual global events on TV and this year’s event is expected to be the largest live entertainment broadcast from the United Kingdom.
Behind Miss World’s popularity, there has always been a vigorous charitable purpose which has so far raised over US$500 million for global charity projects through the programme – Beauty with a Purpose – set up almost 40 years ago by Julia Morley and run by Miss World participants.
