MASHONALAND West province, which used to record an average of 400 malaria cases a day, is winning the fight to contain the disease, with cases reducing to 170 a day.

The province has to date recorded 16 680 cases and a total of 50 deaths since January this year.

A situation report issued by the Ministry of Health and Child Care showed that Mashonaland West recorded a total of 172 malaria cases in all the seven districts within the last 24 hours with Hurungwe and Makonde being the hotspots.

Hurungwe had 88 while Makonde recorded 45 cases, but this is a huge drop from the cases recorded last week, which hovered around 250 per the two districts.

Sanyati recorded 25, with Mhondoro and Chegutu recording six and two, respectively, while Kariba and Zvimba had three cases each.

Mashonaland West provincial medical director, Dr Celestino Dhege, said awareness campaigns were ongoing in communities and at health facilities by multi-sectoral parties.

He said there was a significant decline in reported cases as compared to the numbers received before.

“The numbers per day are going down. Earlier, we were recording around 800 per day. As of now, the reports are showing 359 new cases around the province,” said Dr Dhege during the provincial development committee (PDC) meeting last week.

Despite the numbers dropping, people affected with this disease are many, with the numbers higher than normal and all districts are affected

The Ministry of Health and Child Care, he said, was working with Zimpapers’ Mashonaland West based radio station, Platinum FM, to spread awareness messages.
