ZIMBABWE today joins the rest of the world in commemorating International Nurses Day under the theme, “Our Nurses. Our Future. Caring for nurses strengthens economies”.
Health Service Commission Secretary Dr Christopher Pasi reaffirmed unwavering support for the country’s nursing workforce.
“We recognise nurses as the backbone of our healthcare system, and this year, we celebrate and honour their resilience, dedication and commitment in delivering quality healthcare to the nation,” he said.
Dr Pasi said this year’s theme aligns with the Commission’s strategic goals and the national development vision.
“This year’s theme deeply resonates with our focus. Investing in the nursing workforce is not only a health imperative but a powerful catalyst for socio-economic development,” he said.
Dr Pasi also highlighted the critical role nurses play in preventive care, chronic disease management, maternal and child health, and community outreach-sectors he described as key to building a healthy and productive nation under Vision 2030.
As the world celebrates International Nurses Day, Dr Pasi called on all sectors, public, private, and civil society, to support and invest in the nursing profession.
“Let us invest in care, because care is an investment in our national development. The Health Service Commission stands ready to walk this journey with our nurses, side by side, with renewed commitment and vision,” added Dr Pasi.
International Nurses Day is commemorated annually on May 12, the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing. The day highlights the vital role nurses play in improving global health outcomes.
