Malawi tobacco sales breach $80m mark

Malawi tobacco sales have hit over US$80 million in the first eight weeks of trading on the country’s auction floors, the Auction Holdings Limited said yesterday. AHL said in its latest market report that more than 54.3 million kilogrammes of the golden leaf were sold during the past two months, consisting of 52.1 million kg of burley and just over two million kg of flue-cured tobacco.

According to Tobacco Control Commission chief executive Bruce Munthali, the sales are progressing well at the market, with the crop continuing to attract good prices.

“There is smooth flow of tobacco from growers and at the same time buyers are giving good prices compared to what was offered last year,” he said.

Malawi’s tobacco production for the 2013/14 season is estimated at 194 million kg for all types of tobacco against last year’s 169 million kg. – APA
