A MALAWIAN national died on the spot while nine of her compatriots were seriously injured on Tuesday when a car they were travelling in overturned after hitting three head of cattle along the Bulawayo-Plumtree Road.
Two toddlers aged one and three were among the injured in the accident in which the driver, Geyson Vundla is suspected to have been speeding. The Malawians were coming from Botswana, heading to Bulawayo.

National police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Paul Nyathi confirmed the incident which occurred at about 1am.
“I can confirm that there is an accident involving foreigners from Malawi which occurred at the 51km peg along Bulawayo- Plumtree Road. The vehicle was travelling due north with nine passengers on board. The driver came upon three cattle and he lost control of the vehicle which overturned and landed on its roof. One person died on the spot while the others including the driver were injured and referred to United Bulawayo Hospitals,” said Chief Supt Nyathi.

The police national spokesperson said the deceased’s next of kin are yet to be informed. He appealed to road users to exercise caution, especially when travelling through animal populated areas.

Recently, government announced that it would soon start confiscating and auctioning stray livestock. Transport and Infrastructure Development Minister Dr Obert Mpofu said Cabinet had approved a policy framework to that effect.

This directive follows a call on government to put in place measures to ensure that the country does not continue to lose lives on the road due to stray animals.
