Malawi’s President Mutharika bounces back

Former President Peter Mutharika has won Malawi’s elections by a huge margin.

The Malawi Electoral Commission announced that Mutharika secured 57% of the votes, against current President Chakwera’s 33%.

Chakwera conceded defeat earlier today.

Mutharika served as President of Malawi from 2014 to 2020, when he lost to Chakwera by a wide margin.

MEC’s chairperson, Justice Annabel Mtalimanja read out the results from different areas across the country and said the new President can be sworn in only seven days after the official results are declared but within 30 days.

The election was contested by 17 candidates, but the two front-runners were Mutharika and the incumbent, Chakwera. – BBC
