Man (23) commits suicide over lobola

pole in his in-laws’ yard after they demanded that he finishes off paying lobola before taking his wife.
Police sources said since December last year, Boniface Mapara and his wife, Alistair Shangweni (18) had been having arguments over her alleged promiscuous behaviour while she was in South Africa.
Mwenezi police said following a number of heated arguments, Shangweni left her husband and went to stay with her parents in Village Two in Ngonati Range for a week.
When Mapara followed his wife and begged her to come back home, his in laws told him to pay off the lobola balance before taking their daughter with him.
After failed negotiations with his in laws, Mapara left the Shangweni homestead without his wife.
Police sources said Shangweni family claims Mapara was abusing their daughter.
The following morning Alistair found her husband’s body hanging on a pole close to her bedroom hut and made a report at Mwenezi police station the same morning.
Masvingo provincial police spokesperson Inspector Tinaye Matake confirmed the incident.
