An 84-year-old man has been jailed for 10 years for raping a Grade Six pupil.
The man, who is from Chief Chikwaka area in Juru appeared Murewa Magistrates’ Court facing rape charges.
Initially, the accused was sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment before five years were suspended on the condition of good behaviour.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), in March, the victim, a grade 6 pupil, was left in care of her younger siblings while her mother attended a memorial service.
The accused lured the girl with snacks while she fetched water and raped her in a nearby thicket.
He repeated the crime two weeks later.
It was proved that the abuse was discovered on May 25, when a villager saw the accused entering the victim’s compound.
A search found the accused hiding behind the kitchen door.
The victim reported the incidents, leading to the accused’s arrest.
