A Bulawayo woman allegedly assaulted her 88-year-old husband after he asked for a share of his monthly pension payment. Nelly Ncube, 51, allegedly assaulted her octogenarian husband Khaphela Tshimdzimba with a wooden spoon and a steel pipe resulting in him sustaining a swollen leg.

Tshimdzimba told the court he did not seek medical attention as he could not afford to pay for the service.

Ncube appeared on Friday before magistrate Tawanda Muchemwa to answer to a charge of physical abuse.

She pleaded not guilty as she argued that her husband fell from the bed.

However, the matter was withdrawn before judgement after Tshimdzimba decided to drop charges.

Prosecuting, Kudakwashe Jaravaza told the court that on May 9 at around 8PM Tshimdzimba asked Ncube about his pension money which she usually withdraws from the bank.

The court heard that Tshimdzimba inquired on the whereabouts of his national identity card and the bank card.

“Ncube told him that she didn’t know where his documents were yet she is the one who takes care of them,” said Jaravaza.

He told the court that Ncube told her husband that she was not going to give him any money.

“A misunderstanding arose and Ncube became violent and started assaulting her husband using a wooden spoon that she was using to prepare supper,” said Jaravaza.

The prosecutor said Tshimdzimba fled into a toilet but Ncube gave chase carrying a steel pipe.

“Ncube used the steel pipe to assault her husband several times on his left leg and on the right arm,” said Jaravaza.

The court heard that Tshimdzimba was saved from further punishment by his son, Jackson Phiri, who restrained Ncube.

Phiri later went to the police to report the matter after realising that his father could not walk.
