A DOMBOSHAVA man on Saturday appeared in court facing theft charges after he hired a car from Friendly Fleet Car Rentals and sold it to another person.

Nyasha Tembani Nkathi (38) was remanded in custody when he appeared before Harare magistrate Mrs Ruth Moyo.

It is the State’s case that on September 10 2025, Nkathi and his accomplice Mkoke  Tshabangu went to Friendly Fleet Car Rentals and hired a Toyota GD6 registration number AGE 8773.

The two paid US$450 valid for three days. The following day, Nkathi sold the motor vehicle to John Ben for US$35 000.

The court heard that Ben deposited US$5 245 and agreed with Nkathi that he would surrender the vehicle to Livingstone Musonza pending production of the car’s registration book, which the accused said was in the custody of money lenders.

After the three-day rental period lapsed, Friendly Car Rental company tracked the car and recovered it from Musonza.

It is alleged that Ben discovered that he had been duped, and reported the matter to the police.

Investigations were carried out, and it was discovered that Nkathi misrepresented to Ben and made him pay money for the vehicle which he did not own.
