A MAN from Harare appeared in court yesterday for allegedly smuggling a vehicle into the country.
Tinashe Mangadza, who is represented by Mr Stephen Chikotora, appeared before Harare magistrate Mrs Marehwanazvo Gofa, charged with illegal importation of goods without paying duty and was remanded out of custody on bail of US$150 to December 14.
The State alleges that in 2020 or 2021, Mangadza smuggled a Toyota Hilux GD6 from South Africa into Zimbabwe.
He then allegedly connived with Blessing Matinyarare and Shepherd Hove, to sell the vehicle for US$14 000 plus a set of registration plates for US$1 200 to Fungai Chimwamukombe.
He evaded duty through smuggling and by fraudulent use of a set of registration plates so that he and the subsequent buyer could pass through toll gates without paying.
Following a tip-off, police investigated and then arrested Mangadza on Monday.
The smuggled motor vehicle was impounded while the fraudulently affixed sets of number plates were recovered.
