A MANYAME Airbase man was on Monday arrested for allegedly raping and impregnating a 15-year-old girl.

Tanaka Chibate, 21, is reported to have raped the schoolgirl while she was coming from photocopying her documents.

Harare provincial police spokesperson Inspector Luckmore Chakanza confirmed Chibate’s arrest, saying the girl has been referred to Mbare Edith Clinic for medical examination.

“Police are investigating a case where a 15-year-old girl was raped sometime in June this year,” said Insp Chakanza.

“On the 3rd day of June, at around 7pm, the complainant went to photocopy her documents. On her way back home, the complainant saw the accused trailing her.

“As the complainant approached a block close to her place, the accused had disappeared from the path he was walking.

“After a few minutes, the accused emerged again from behind and grabbed the complainant by the neck while holding her shirt, but the complainant managed to identify the accused.

“The complainant escaped, but she fell and the accused grabbed her and accused her of being pompous.

“The accused forced the complainant to the ground, threatened and raped her,” said Insp Chakanza.

The following day, the complainant went to school and met the accused’s friend and told her of the rape ordeal.

However, neither reported to the police or their parents.

Last Saturday, the girl’s mother became suspicious of her daughter’s bulging tummy and questioned her but she denied having any sexual encounter with anyone.

The mother tested the girl for pregnancy and it returned a positive result.

The girl then narrated her ordeal to her sister leading to Chibate’s arrest.
