THERE was no evidence.
Just rumours that Bhekumuzi Nkomo of Dundula Village could be cheating on his wife Onika Tsutsubi.
When she questioned him about the hearsay, he lost it and meted out a violent beatdown that left his 50-year-old wife bruised, battered and barely breathing.
Nkomo showed zero chill when Tsutsubi, asked him about whispers in the village that he was seeing another woman.
Instead of answering her, he went bellicose.
The court heard how, on March 23, Nkomo snapped and grabbed a thick log from a hedge. He pounced on Tsutsubi, thrashing her mercilessly with it.
“He hit her all over the body. Then he stomped on her like he was trying to silence her for good,” said Prosecutor Joseph Rugara as the courtroom sat in stunned silence.
Tsutsubi’s screams pierced the night air and caught the attention of neighbors who rushed to the scene. They found Nkomo still in action, swinging the log with rage while his wife cried helplessly.
The savage assault left her with bruises on her back, thigh and forearm. Each mark told a painful story of unrestrained brutality.
When Nkomo appeared before Tredgold Magistrate Ms Vimbai Chirayi, the court was gripped by disbelief. His sheer cruelty dumbfounded many in the gallery.
Nkomo was remanded in custody until 24 July. His actions are a grim reminder that behind some closed doors lies a battlefield, not a home.
