A HARARE woman today got a reprieve from her alleged abusive husband after she was granted a protection order by Civil Court magistrate Ms Meenal Narotam.

Ms Jesca Mashumba of Stoddart in Mbare alleged that her husband Mr Peter Munemo is in the habit of beating her every month when she receives her salary.

“He abuses me saying that I should be giving him all my money so that he can squander it with his girlfriend,” said Ms Mashumba.

She told the court that her husband forcibly takes all her pay leaving her with nothing.

Ms Mashumba also accused Mr Munemo threatening to kill her for refusing to hand over her salary.

“I cannot continue to work hard for him and his girlfriend when I have children. He must not physically abuse me over my income,” she said.

Ms Mashumba said her husband harassed her in public and spat in her face, demanding money to give to his girlfriend.

She also accused Mr Munemo of damaging household property that she bought because he was jealous she earns more money than him.

Ms Mashumba told the court that her husband has been arrested three times for domestic violence but he is not changing his behaviour, prompting her to apply for a protection order.

In response, Mr Munemo denied the allegations, arguing that his wife does not respect him as the head of the family and that she always hides her salary from him.

“I only ask her to help me with her money. I’m the one who pays the bills, she is very stingy even when it comes to buying food,” Mr Munemo argued.

He disputed that he used weapons to attack his wife saying she is the one who is violent and at one time stoned and injured him.

After hearing the testimonies of the couple, the court issued a protection order in favour of Ms Mashumba and ordered Mr Munemo to stop abusing her and taking her money.
