A 30-year-old man from Khanda Village under Chief Sogwala in Lower Gweru has been sentenced to 24 months in prison for assaulting his brother over a US$5 debt.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPAZ)), Michael Nyathi appeared before a Gweru Magistrate facing one count of assault.
He was sentenced to 24 months in prison, but six months were suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour.
The remaining 18 months were suspended on condition that he complete community service.
The NPA said the incident occurred on September 1, when Justice Nyathi went to Michael Nyathi’s homestead to claim US$5 owed to him.
This did not go down well with Michael who rushed to his hut and took an unidentified object and struck Justice on the head.
Justice fainted and only regained consciousness upon admission to a hospital.
He sustained a deep cut on the face as a result of this assault.
The NPA encouraged members of the public to desist from violence and resolve their disputes amicably or seek third-party mediation.
