Lovemore Kadzura
Rusape Correspondent
A Rusape man who trusted his best friend with looking after his family while he was away at work got a rude awakening after discovering that his buddy was bedding his wife.
Luckmore Jesinawo dragged Edward Chapasuka to Chief Makoni’s court, accusing him of betraying him by dating his wife, only identified as Lydia.
“On August 23, I called my wife and asked her to come to Rusape. She arrived at around 7pm and I requested for her cellphone. This is when Chapasuka started sending some love text messages. I instructed my wife to respond and the conversation went on.
“Chapasuka later phoned my wife and they had a normal lovers’ conversation. I recorded the call. I later called Chapasuka and informed him that I was aware of what he was doing behind my back and he switched off his phone.
“I also discovered that he took my wife to Shurugwi without my knowledge. I am so hurt because Chapasuka is my best friend and I trusted him so much.
““He is the one who looked after my family, doing menial work in my absence,” said Jesinawo as he demanded eight cattle as compensation.
However, Chapasuka denied having an affair with Lydia, telling the court that he spurned Lydia’s advances.
“We went to a rally in Shurugwi. In the bus, Lydia told me that she was having marital problems with Jesinawo and said they had not been intimate for one and half years.
“She claimed that she no longer loved her husband and requested that we have an affair.
“I refused, telling her that Jesinawo was my best friend who also pays me after doing some work at his homestead. I never dated her. My phone is always with my wife,” Chapasuka told the court.
However, Lydia threw Chapasuka under the bus and admitted dating him.
“On our way to Shurugwi, he bought drinks and bread for me at Murambinda Town Centre. He also bought a plate of sadza and beef for me in Chivhu.
“On our way back, Chapasuka offered to build a grass-thatched house for me for free.
“He also asked me why my husband was rarely at home and I told him that we were having some marital challenges.
“He proposed love to me, promising to take care of me. I accepted the proposal on condition that the affair should remain a secret.
“We began seeing each other at secluded places, but I suspect that some people saw us and informed my husband.
“He called and instructed me to come to Rusape. He went through my phone and stumbled upon my love messages with Chapasuka.
“However, I slept with Chapasuka once,” said Lydia.
The court ruled that Chapasuka deserves severe punishment for betraying his friend’s trust.
“Chapasuka, you are not clever at all. You wanted this court to believe your lies.
“Even if she proposed love to you, that doesn’t give you a license to date her because she is a married woman. You should compensate Jesinawo with four cattle and reimburse him the US$70 cost of this court application,” ruled Chief Makoni.
