A Chiendambuya man endured excruciating pain from the waist down to his legs for six months before passing on last month after he allegedly slept with his neighbour’s wife.
His relatives believes that he was ‘fixed’ by his lover’s husband.
The now late Moses Murira had to send his wife, Gracien Murira, to Ishmael Chapauka’s wife to plead for her urine so that he could drink it in a desperate bid to reverse the ‘curse’.
This emerged last week at Chief Makoni’s community court where Chapauka had dragged the late Moses’ brother, Tendai, to the community court for labelling him a wizard who had ‘locked’ his wife.
“The Muriras came to my homestead begging for my wife’s urine. They said Moses slept with my wife and was bedridden. They said the only cure was drinking my wife’s urine. After sometime, Moses died and they came back demanding a beast, accusing me of causing their relative’s death.
“I want them to pay me five cattle for labelling me a wizard. I was fined a beast by Headman Chiendambuya,” said Chapauka.
Tendai Murira who was standing in for the late Moses told the court that his brother died a painful death as efforts to assist him medically and spiritually were all in vain.
“My brother was bedridden in July 2023. It started with his legs before spreading to the whole body.
“He was in excruciating pain and was struggling to relieve himself.
“In January, he called me and said he wanted to be escorted to Chapauka so that he could beg for forgiveness for sleeping with his wife.
“The following day, Gracien went to Chapauka’s homestead to beg for forgiveness. Chapauka visited Moses’ homestead and we explained to him what the terminally ill Moses was saying. Headman Chiendambuya’s aides were present,” said Tendai.
Gracien told the court that they were told by faith healers that the only remedy was for Moses to drink Chapauka’s wife’s urine.
“We visited a prophet who told us that Moses slept with Chapauka’s wife and the only remedy for him was to drink her urine. Moses also confirmed sleeping with Chapauka’s wife. He was in great pain for the last six months, and we were intimate only twice. However, when we went to ask for the urine, Chapauka’s wife denied ever sleeping with Moses. He later died,” she said.
Chapauka’s wife whose name was not mentioned in court vehemently denied sleeping with Moses and said she was surprised when Gracien requested for her urine.
She added that people are now accusing her of causing Moses’ death.
“I never slept with Moses. I was surprised when they asked for my urine. At Moses’ funeral, villagers sang songs denigrating me. They were accusing me of causing his death. The Muriras must also compensate me,” she said.
In his ruling, Chief Makoni said there is nothing wrong for a man to “centrally lock” his wife as a way of protecting his territory.
He added that sleeping with married women has repercussions, and death is one of them.
“The case is complicated in that Moses is now late and Chapauka’s wife is denying ever sleeping with him. Sleeping with a married woman is a serious offence and perpetrators must face the music. Putting runyoka on your wife is just like erecting electric fence on your garden and when thieves are electrocuted, we do not blame the garden owner.
“If it is true that Chapauka put runyoka on his wife, he was simply protecting his territory. The fine imposed on him by the headman is set aside.
“Men who sleep with married women are disrespectful, and this should serve as a warning that you can die if you sleep with married women. You now have an example of what disrespect can lead you to.
“Chapauka’s claim of five cattle is also dismissed because you are neighbours. You need to live in peace and harmony. The Murira family will meet the cost of the lawsuit, which is US$150,” ruled Chief Makoni.
