The love for beer and cigarettes got a Silobela man into trouble after he was arrested for breaking into a house to steal his prized assets.
When some are being arrested for stealing cash to enrich themselves or other valuable assets, all Matshobana Machona (42) of Silobela, cares for are a puff and a sip.
Machona was arraigned before Kwekwe magistrate Mr Tayengwa Sangster facing unlawful entry and theft charges.
He was sentenced to an initial nine months jail term but will serve an effective six months after three months were set aside on condition of good behaviour.
It is the State’s case that on 2 March 2019, Machona broke into a house belonging to a businessman.
After making good his entry, Machona allegedly took a bottle of whiskey, a box of matches and a box of Madison cigarettes before disappearing into the darkness.
Machona was apprehended while drunk the following morning at his homestead.
