A 20-year-old Harare man has come up with a new outdoor field sport called Dumball played by 10 players.
Keith Nyereyemhuka said he dreams of changing the way sports are approached in the world.
“This is the first African sport which we can be experts at and create new opportunities for Africans. It’s an addition to other sports like football and rugby, among others, and it is set to be Zimbabwe’s first ever invented sport.
“If you look at it, what are the chances of making the NBA while in Zimbabwe? The chances are so small, but with Dumball, we can create our own legacy with a sport which other countries can adopt,” he said.
“It’s a fast-paced sport played by 10 players, five on each side, and the new sporting positions such as attack muscle, slide muscle and more.
“l had planned to make it a sport with a variation that could be played on an outdoor field and also on a board indoors to allow both athletic and non-athletic people to be involved.
“No legs are involved, just running only and hands are more involved,” he said.
“I hope to get the right platform to present my gift of invention and creativity to Zimbabwe. I have a lot more I want to reveal to the world. Everything is now set.
“For me it’s about the impact more than anything else. I want to change the face of sport for our nation and the world.
“And by getting exposure, we could catch the eye of investors. I only need to get the sport introduced to the people and investors.”
“When I look at Africa, I see a continent full of enthusiasm for sport, but what are the chances that you will get to play in the Premier League coming from a place like Chitungwiza, Mbare and other areas.
“Chances are so narrow. Some international boundaries are so hard to punch through, but what if we could have our own sport, just like the Americans have the NBA.”
