A 53-year old Murehwa man committed suicide on Monday after he tried to rape his 11-year-old daughter after he returned home drunk. The man (name withheld) allegedly consumed a pesticide after his wife had gone to file a report with the police. Mashonaland East acting provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Tendai Mwanza confirmed the incident yesterday and said investigations were under way.

“I can confirm that we received a report of a man from (name withheld) Village under Chief Mangwende in Murehwa, who committed suicide after he had attempted to rape his daughter,” he said.

According to police, on Monday at around 0100 hours, the now deceased went home drunk and entered the kitchen where his 11-year-old daughter was sleeping. He allegedly sneaked into her blankets and tried to rape her, but she managed to escape and rushed to inform her mother. It is reported that the mother confronted her husband about his behaviour and on the same day she went to the police to file a report. When she returned home, she found her husband dead and a bottle of the pesticide besides his body. She reported the matter to the police, who attended the scene and recovered the bottle of pesticide. They took to the body to Murehwa Hospital mortuary for post-mortem.
