Man crushed by train, police suspect suicide

POLICE in the Midlands yesterday said they are investigating a suspected suicide case after a man was crushed by a National Railways of Zimbabwe locomotive on Saturday evening.

Elijah Zinyuku allegedly threw himself in front of a moving train in Gweru, at around 5pm, and was crushed to death.

“The incident occurred on 13 August 2022 at around 5.15pm at the 557.3 km peg near Mtapa Gweru.

“It is alleged that Mutakwa Fanuel, who is employed as an engine man by the National Railways of Zimbabwe, was operating a locomotive from Gweru, heading to Harare, when he ran over Zinyuku Elijah,” said Midlands police spokesperson, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko.

The incident was witnessed by a passer-by, Enock Trustworthy, who reported it to the police.

“A passer-by, Enock Trustworthy, witnessed the incident and went to report to the police.

“Police attended the scene and the body of the deceased was conveyed to Gweru Provincial Hospital for a post-mortem.

“Investigations are still in progress,” said Insp Mahoko.
