POLICE are investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatal accident involving an Odzi man who was struck by a Mozambique-bound goods train on Monday evening.

The deceased, Trymore Shata (35), of Confect ARDA, suffered severe injuries, including decapitation and multiple fractures and cuts, as his body was dragged by the train for over 20 metres.

Acting Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka confirmed the incident, saying the train driver, Elsio Verniz Jimu, saw Shata lying on the railway line about 60 metres away.

“He sounded the horn to alert him, but Shata failed to move out of the way. Jimu applied the emergency brakes, but unfortunately, Shata was run over by the train. The train came to a stop after about 20 metres, while Shata’s body was still under the train,” said Assistant Inspector Chinyoka.

Shata was pronounced dead at the scene, with his body conveyed to Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital for a post mortem examination.

His next of kin, James Shata, his father, was notified.

Assistant Inspector Chinyoka said investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident, including whether Shata was alive or deceased when he was struck by the train.
