In a bid to escape paying maintenance, a Sakubva man denied ever having sexual intercourse with the alleged mother of his child. Tatenda Peturo was dragged to court by Alice Sunzuma who claimed $100 maintenance for the upkeep of their seven-year-old child. Peturo said: “Your Worship I am surprised that she is dragging me to court as the father of her child. I dated her from 2005 to 2006 and the child is now seven years meaning she sired him with another man. I am shocked because from the time I parted ways with her it is more than seven years now.”
However, Peturo was left shell-shocked when Sunzuma produced a birth certificate which showed that he was the father of the child. Sunzuma told the court that he was lying to evade paying maintenance. “He is lying to the court. We dated from 2007 to 2008 and we had sexual intercourse,” she said.
Peturo told the court that he will not pay anything for the upkeep of a child he does not know. The presiding magistrate Miss Venencia Mugota told Peturo to pay maintenance awaiting DNA tests.
“According to maintenance law, when a woman approaches the court pointing you as the father then you should pay some amount until a DNA test is done. You should be happy that you were given a son by this honourable court,” she said.
Peturo said: “I can only offer $20 because I am not employed.” However Miss Mugota ordered Peturo to pay $30 effective from 30 November.
