Man dies fleeing police public drinking raid

A BULAWAYO man who was trying to evade arrest for drinking in public, fell to his death yesterday just outside MaHadebe Beer Hall in Emakhandeni suburb.
The 39-year-old man (name withheld) was drinking beer when the police approached him while he was sitting on a perimeter wall.

Eyewitnesses said the police arrested a few individuals who were drinking in public before he fell off the wall while trying to flee.

“When the police came he fell behind the wall. When he woke up, he walked a few steps while bleeding from the nose.
“He fell again and this time he did not get up. Unfortunately, when the ambulance came he was already dead and they left him there,” said Mr Zenzo Moyo, a resident who witnessed the incident.

When a Sunday News crew arrived at the scene, the man’s body was still outside the beerhall and it was covered with a red blanket. Relatives  who were still shocked had gathered where the incident happened.

Mr Gift Moyo, who is the cousin of the deceased, said his relative had been in good health all along and he did not complain about anything.

“I do not know what to say because I am really shocked. I am still trying to accept that my brother is really gone. The whole of yesterday we were together, there was no problem with him. No one could have thought that he would be gone today,” said Mr Moyo
