A HARARE woman has been hauled to court after failing to pay spousal maintenance.
Maxwell Hungwe was demanding $70 000 from his estranged wife, Tinevimbo Chirikure. He was accusing her of leaving him with three minor children without any financial support.
He told the court that Tinevimbo left him years ago without any explanation.
Maxwell claimed their problems started when his right hand was amputated before he became deaf.
“I told her that I couldn’t take care of our family because I’m deaf and crippled but she then ran away because it was now her turn to take care of us. She takes all my aid from World Vision and I’m suffering with our seven children, and I’m not sure if she remarried or not since we lost communication.
“She is an agent at some company and I’m sure she is earning a lot, if possible I would like to see her pay slip,” he said.
In her defence, Tinevimbo said she was the one taking care of their children and was granted a protection order against him because of his violent nature.
She refused to pay spousal maintenance since she was the one taking care of their kids and paying rentals.
“There is nothing I am offering Your Worship, he is lying, I’m the one who is taking care of the kids and paying for their fees.
“I left him because he was abusive and had to get a protection order against him and ran away after,” she said.
Magistrate Ayanda Dhlamini dismissed the application.
