A 28-year-old man from Dangamvura high-density suburb was fined $200 for reconnecting ZESA cables, which had been disconnected for failure to pay bills.
ZESA personnel who were on duty, on January 14, 2014 disconnected electricity at number P46A Dangamvura for failure to pay bills.
Victor Kushamba (28), the owner of the house, reconnected the cables, in an attempt to continue using electricity for free.
A ZESA officer on duty that same day, one Fostina Chikuse, apprehended Kushamba and made a report.
Kushamba appeared in court on October 31 before magistrate Mrs Annie Ndiraya, facing charges of tampering with ZESA apparatus as defined in section 60(a) of the ZESA Act Chapter 9:02.
He pleaded guilty to the charges.
When asked why he committed the crime, Kushamba said that he could not operate without electricity at his homestead and his aim was to pay the bill in a few days to come after he had looked for the money.
“I reconnected the cables the same day they were disconnected because there was no way we could operate without electricity.
“This was done with the idea that the ZESA officials were gone.
“I was going to pay the debt after a few days because I intended to look for the money. This did not work out when it was found out that I had reconnected the cables,” said Kushamba.
The $200 fine is to be paid by November 30 and six months were wholly suspended on condition that he did not commit the same crime in the next five years.
