Man fined after explosive lover’s tiff turns ugly

A GWERU man saw red and landed himself in hot soup after travelling all the way to Bulawayo to visit his baby mama — only to find another man in the picture!

Derington Ngwenya (32) was dragged before Western Commonage Magistrate Skhethile Moyo, facing charges of malicious damage to property and physical abuse after a domestic visit spiralled into a violent showdown.

Ngwenya pleaded guilty to both charges and was swiftly convicted. He was slapped with a US$100 fine for damaging property and another US$100 fine for the assault.

The court also threw in a four-month prison term, but suspended two months on condition of good behaviour, and the other two months on condition he pays restitution.
So, what sparked the drama?

Ngwenya told the court that he had travelled from Gweru to Bulawayo to see his girlfriend, Lindiwe Sibanda, after she requested a meet-up. But when he arrived at her Magwegwe North home, he allegedly found another man in the house!

Trying to leave peacefully, Ngwenya claimed Lindiwe refused to let him go, leading to a heated exchange. He alleged that she struck him first and he retaliated.

The court, however, heard that on 4 April 2025 around 7PM, Ngwenya smashed Lindiwe’s cellphone in a fit of rage before slapping her across the face, strangling her and pushing her to the ground during an argument over their child’s upkeep.

Police were called in and Ngwenya was arrested shortly after the incident.

As tensions rise over relationship disputes and co-parenting challenges, the magistrate warned that violence will not be tolerated, regardless of emotional triggers.
