Man fined for filming woman in change room

East London — A man has been sentenced to 100 days’ jail or a R5,000 fine for filming a young woman in a clothing store’s change rooms, Netwerk24 reported yesterday.

Kevin Fernandes, 36, on Thursday pleaded guilty to a charge of crimen injuria in the East London Magistrate’s Court.

The court suspended R3,000 of the fine. His name would be placed on the sex offenders’ register.

Fernandes indicated he would pay the fine.

He stuck his cellphone under the cubicle door in the change rooms of the Pick n Pay Clothing store in the Beacon Bay mall on December 21, 2014.

The 19-year-old woman he was trying to film caught him.

Police spokesperson Captain Stephen Marais arrived on the scene and found a crowd around Fernandes’s car in the parking lot, trying to stop him from leaving.

The victim’s mother, who may not be named for safety reasons, told Die Burger: “To get his name on the sex offenders’ register was the aim of the whole case.

“Unfortunately my daughter was the victim, but it happened, and the most important thing is to warn the community against people like him.”

Marais said any sentence imposed on anyone who violated others’ rights was a victory. — Sapa
