A 43-year-old man from Turk Mine in Bubi District has been fined US$300 for assaulting his wife during a dispute over money that had been allocated for their children’s school fees.
Nkosilathi Sibanda of ZESA Turk Mine in the Inyathi area appeared before Inyathi magistrate Mr Challenge Mahembe facing a charge of physical abuse.
The court heard that on September 9, 2026, Sibanda gave his wife, Trezia Mpofu (38), US$100 to pay their children’s school fees.
Mpofu paid the fees and used the balance of the money to purchase materials required for the children’s school projects.
She later returned home, produced the receipts and explained how the money had been spent. At about 11am, Sibanda allegedly demanded the remaining money, but Mpofu told him she would give it to him the following day.
Later that evening, while the couple were walking to the shops and Sibanda was on his way to work, he allegedly demanded the money again.
Mpofu told him that she would pay him the following day before walking away.
Sibanda allegedly struck Mpofu on the head with an unknown object, causing her to bleed and collapse to the ground.
The court heard that Mpofu regained her footing while feeling dizzy and saw Sibanda searching for a stone, prompting her to push him away.
Police officers who were on patrol intervened and rescued Mpofu before she made a report at ZRP Inyathi.
Sibanda was fined US$300 or the equivalent in ZiG, with six months’ imprisonment in default of payment.
A further six-month prison term was wholly suspended on condition that he does not, during the period of suspension, commit any offence involving violence against another person for which, upon conviction, he is sentenced to imprisonment without the option of a fine.
