A MUTASA man waylaid a patron who was on his way home from a beer drink and axed him on the head following a misunderstanding last Wednesday.Police confirmed the incident and said Kumbirai Tichiwangana (25) was assisting them with investigations following his brutal attack on Annias Chakanyuka (30).

Deputy Manicaland provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Luxson Chananda said the two had a misunderstanding while drinking beer at Chigomba Business Centre in Mutasa.

“The two were drinking beer at Chigomba Business Centre on August 20 when they had a misunderstanding. They were both watching television with other patrons. Their misunderstanding almost became physical when other patrons intervened and the two appeared to have found common ground,” he said.

Asst Insp Chananda said Tichiwangana left the place early and everyone assumed that he had gone home, but he had ambushed Chakanyuka.

“As Chakanyuka was on his way home, Tichiwangana emerged from his hiding place and struck him at the back of his head with an axe. A police report was made by Tawanda Mawoyo,” said Asst Insp Chananda.

Chakanyuka was rushed to Bonda Mission Hospital where his condition was reported to be serious.

The axe used by Tichiwangana is yet to be recovered and investigations are in progress.
