Charles Chirere is a holder of a South African passport and his Zimbabwean one has since expired. He has not renounced his Zimbabwean citizenship, as the law requires.
Chirere (64) yesterday appeared before Harare magistrate Mr Elijah Makomo facing allegations of contravening the Citizenship Act, which prohibits dual citizenship.
He was not formally charged and the matter was remanded to January 15.
Prosecutor Ms Joyce Sithole alleges that Chirere is a Zimbabwean citizen and holds a national identity card whose number is 58-009157 F 47.
Chirere is now reportedly living in South Africa at number 5 Parker Street Mandalay Area, Michaels Plane, Cape Town.
On December 13 this year Chirere appeared at the Harare magistrates’ court on charges of conspiracy to commit an offence and unlawful possession of firearms.
He was ordered to produce his passport before bail could be considered.
Chirere allegedly produced an expired Zimbabwe passport number Z018419 which was in his name.
He also produced another South African passport number 462474467 in the name of Morris Sizwe Ngalo bearing his photograph.
On December 16 investigations carried out at the Registrar General’s Office established that Chirere did not renounce his Zimbabwean citizenship.
