AN Insiza man, in Matabeleland South province, is in trouble with the law after it emerged that he had been hosting unsanctioned political meetings at his family farm in the guise of giving locals empowerment opportunities.
Thembelani Moyo, who inherited the family commercial farm after the death of his father, Nkosana Moyo, had reportedly turned his farm into a mining venture where he would not only let gold panners pay rental fees but would also allegedly have meeting of the opposition Citizens Coalition for Change, without seeking police clearance.
According to police sources, they had received a complaint that the farm had since been turned into a meeting place for members of the opposition and a raid at the farm had confirmed this, as various campaign materials belonging to the opposition were discovered at the farm.
“Our investigations revealed that this commercial farm had since turned into a conduit for the opposition while at the same time, Thembelani Moyo was claiming that he was allowing gold panners into the farm, with the condition that they pay US$10 each per week.
“We however later received a tipoff that what was actually happening on the ground is that this farm was playing host to unsanctioned meetings. We subsequently raided the farm and discovered various campaign material belonging to the opposition, unfortunately we did not find the owner of the farm, Thembelani Moyo,” said the police source.
The police further revealed that they had since launched a manhunt to apprehend Moyo.
