A MUTARE man, Golden Dzvairo, was this week sentenced to 24 months in prison when he appeared before Mutare provincial magistrate, Ms Annie Ndiraya on charges of theft and unlawful entry committed in aggravating circumstances.
Dzvairo, who had pleaded not guilty to the charges, was convicted due to overwhelming evidence adduced in court.
He had 12 months suspended for five years on the usual conditions.
Another 12 months were suspended on condition that he restitutes the complainant, Takudzwa Matanga by March 24, and performs 350 hours of community service at Greencraft Primary School.
The court heard that Dzvairo stole 3x50kg bags of Compound D and a blue umbrella from Matanga.
Ms Ndiraya said Dzvairo committed a serious crime, and should take full responsibility for his actions.
“The court takes a serious view of theft and unlawful entry, and Golden Dvairo’s actions are no exception. While we acknowledge that he has a clean record, we must also consider the impact of his actions on the victim and the community.
“The sentence imposed is aimed at rehabilitating Dzvairo and deterring him from committing similar crimes in the future. We hope that he will take this opportunity to reform and become a productive member of society,” said Ms Ndiraya.
