Man jailed five years for striking ex-lover with machete

A 40-YEAR-OLD man from Nkayi in Matabeleland North Province who struck his ex-girlfriend with a machete after he found her with another man has been sentenced to five years in jail for attempted murder.

Madlenkosi Mhlanga who was convicted of attempted murder will however, serve an effective three years in jail after two years of the sentence was suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour.

According to an update from the National Prosecuting Authority on 24 September 2023 the accused went to the complainant who is also his ex-lover’s homestead at around 11pm.

Upon arrival he found her in the kitchen hut with her boyfriend who is the second complainant in this matter.

The court heard that he then ordered the complainant to open the door and she refused.

In a fit of jealousy, he then set ablaze the kitchen hut.

His ex-lover however, managed to escape with her boyfriend.

The accused then then struck her with a machete once on the right shoulder before he was stopped by the second complainant

The matter was reported to the police leading to the arrest of the accused person.
