A 22-YEAR-OLD man from Mantanjeni area in Mbembesi, Matabeleland South Province who punched and kicked his lover in the private parts accusing her of two-timing him, heaved a sigh of relief when he was spared jail agony.
Kwanisile Dlangisa appeared before Bulawayo magistrate,Themba Chimiso facing a physical abuse charge. He pleaded not guilty but was convicted after a full trial and sentenced to 12 months imprisonment.
Three months were suspended for a period of five years, on condition that during that period he does not commit a similar offence. The remaining nine months were suspended on condition that Dlangisa performs 315 hours of community service at Mbembesi Police Station.
During sentencing, the magistrate noted the prevalence of physical abuse cases in the area. The magistrate said a deterrent sentence should be effected , to send a strong message to would-be offenders.
In mitigation, Dlangisa apologised for his actions and promised to refrain from future violent behaviour. He requested lenience from the court, saying he was a first-time offender.
The court heard that Dlangisa met his girlfriend (name not supplied) at Mantanjeni village while she was selling fruits. It is said Dlangisa started accusing his lover of cheating on him with a local man.
In a fit of rage, he grabbed her hand, punching her in the process.
The force of the blow caused her to fall to the ground.
He went on to kick her all over the body and in her private parts.
The woman bled as a result of the attack and was rushed to hospital for treatment. The matter was reported to the police leading to his arrest.
